Heritage

The Malankara Mar Thoma Syrian Church traces its origins to the ministry of Saint Thomas the Apostle, who is believed to have arrived in India around AD 52 and established early Christian communities along the Malabar Coast. These ancient communities grew with strong ties to the wider Eastern Church, while preserving a distinct Indian Christian identity.

Through the centuries, the Church experienced both growth and challenges, including periods of foreign influence. In the 19th century, a significant reformation movement led by Abraham Malpan brought renewal by restoring the centrality of Scripture, simplifying worship, and emphasizing a personal faith in Christ.

Today, the Mar Thoma Church stands as a reformed Eastern Church with a global presence, committed to worship, mission, education, and social service—continuing its rich apostolic heritage while engaging meaningfully with the modern world.

“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” — Hebrews 13:8
